Cancer Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
Cancer Rehabilitation
When you have been changed by a serious illness or injury, rehabilitation can help restore your physical ability and improve your quality of life. Cancer rehabilitation helps a person with cancer obtain the best physical, social, psychological, and work-related functioning during and after cancer treatment. The goal of rehabilitation is to help a person regain control over many aspects of their lives and remain as independent and productive as possible. Rehabilitation can be valuable to anyone with cancer and those recovering from cancer treatment.
Where does Physical Therapy come in?
A physical therapist works with patients to help restore mobility and physical functioning, while preventing further disability. This service may be particularly important for people who have lost muscle tone because of prolonged bed rest, have trouble with balance, or need to use canes or other assistive devices after cancer treatment.
Physical Therapy aims to improve your quality of life and independence by improving your ability to be active and comfortable. Physical therapists can reduce your pain, improve your mobility (i.e., walking, going up stairs, getting in and out of bed), and restore your physical function/performance of everyday activities. They evaluate movement potential and help establish agreed upon goals. Depending on your condition, you may focus on flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination and/or balance.
If you or someone you love could benefit from our cancer rehabilitation program, please contact us right away. We are here to make this difficult time easier for you and your family.

Benefits of Physical Therapy Programs for Knee Health
The knee, one of the largest and most complex joints of the body, is designed for mobility and stability. The knee is basically a hinge joint between the femur and the tibia. It allows the motion of flexion and extension. A slight degree of rotation and lateral motion is allowed when the knee is flexed, but since the knee lacks the bony stability of the hip joint, it must depend upon muscles and strong ligaments to bind the component bones together.
Although the knee is the largest joint in the body, it is certainly not the strongest. Because of its exposed position and the great functional demands imposed on it by weight-bearing stress such as walking, running and jumping, the knee suffers derangement of its function and stability more frequently than any other joint.
Use common sense and listen to your body. Aim for prevention whenever possible and seek out help when appropriate. Your body does communicate to you. You just need to listen.
At Friendship Heights Rehab Center, the staff works in collaboration with the patient’s primary care doctor to manage a patient’s health and wellness over the long term, helping to cut down on habit forming pain relief drugs. A goal at FHRC is to educate the patient about common conditions that cause chronic pain. Understanding combined with the correct therapy can bring natural relief from knee pain as well as other chronic conditions.

Improving Sports Performance Through Focus of Training
Many sports can benefit from well-integrated approaches to performance, but part of the program should include the basic ability to move. An often missing ingredient to developing a program aimed at improving physical performance is a review at the ability to move the body. Oftentimes emphasis is placed on equipment, technique, and mental conditioning while ignoring the basics of movement.
Coaches know what contributes to power, accuracy, and effective plays. Often if you look at the beginning stance, plus the position of the body when a change in direction occurs and the end of the follow-through, you can determine key components of movement in a particular sport.
An integrated approach to performance enhancement in sports is the best way to get results with the least risk for injury. There are many components to sports performance but maximizing the body’s potential could be the key to success.

Manual Therapy, An Integrated Approach to Healing
Physical therapists often see people with several problems. The prime concern becomes sorting out top priorities. We need to think multi-dimensionally, rather than in a linear fashion. No more simply, "Do this exercise and your ankle will feel better." Our priority becomes determining which techniques give the most benefits in the least amount of time.
Physical therapists who previously screened only the muscle and joint systems have broadened their approach to include examining the connective tissue system as it relates to the organs, and the muscular system as it relates to the vascular system and the lymphatic system. They now understand how the supportive tissues influence the immune system, which is critical for the health of the individual. Many techniques stimulate the person’s own healing process in a gentle manner, so as to cause no further damage to the system.

Therapy for Pulmonary Disease
Pulmonary disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease of the airways in the lungs. It is a chronic respiratory disorder that progressively worsens lung function and limits airflow. It encompasses emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma. A primary symptom of the disease is difficulty breathing.
It is the mission of our Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Program to provide individuals with cardiopulmonary disease in Montgomery County and N.W. Washington with a facility that addresses the daily problems they face as a result of their disease. Treatment consists of an individualized program of education and exercise. Participants learn about the heart and lungs and how to exercise with less shortness of breath.
We believe in empowering the patient and the family to "live and breathe" with cardiopulmonary disease. Our program in Pulmonary Physical Therapy strives to utilize state of the art technology and evidence based practice.
